I bought this bag for a long business trip a few months back. It’s got a lot of things going for it, including something I didn’t quite expect. The more I look at it, the more I love the look of this backpack.

The signature ballistic nylon isn’t like your college backpack that falls apart after a few abuses. Its material feels much more like the luggage I bought for a few hundred dollars ten years ago. That luggage has yet to show any signs of wear.

After a few months of lugging my Tumi Alpha Bravo Kingsville Deluxe Brief Pack, I can safely say this bag will last just as long. While writing this laptop backpack review, I thought a lot about what I liked and disliked about this backpack; the trush is this is the best laptop back I’ve owned.

Let me back that up with an in-depth elaboration of this great backpack.

Zooming in on Tumi Alpha Bravo

Ruggedly Built

The lining is big enough to fit a fairly decent sized laptop, though some of the thicker models might be a bit of a stretch. I like to write out in the forest, so having a bag that felt fairly waterproof and came with a cupholder is a great asset.

I’d say it could fit a one liter bottle. The only major flaw for roadtrips and camping is that the bag has a somewhat thin bottom pad, meaning you can’t just toss your bag down without risking some damage to your laptop.

Tumi Alpha Bravo Kingsville Deluxe Brief Pack ReviewTop compartment view of Tumi Alpha Bravo laptop backpack

One thing that really plays into this bag’s favor, though, is the waterproof nature of the laptop pocket, meaning a rainstorm isn’t going to destroy your investment.

Well-Thought Design

As far as comfort goes, this bag does fairly well in this department. For example, it has a mesh back that’s nice to carry on a hot day. The top zip closure means that it’s simple enough to access, and the straps are easy on the shoulders.

Adjusting the straps isn’t an especially extraordinary process, with the mechanism in line with most other backpacks I’ve had. Additionally, when lugging it around with a rolling bag, there’s this really nice feature where you can slip it onto the metal handle, preventing the backpack from falling off in transit.

As a frequent traveler, it’s one of the features that I appreciate most about this design. Writing this laptop backpack review, I realized that the one downside in the construction is that this extra flap makes the backpack’s footprint a little bigger, but honestly overall the backpack is pretty portable.

Plenty of Pockets for Organization

For those obsessed with pockets, you’ll find a lot to like here as well. There’s a few side pockets for items like your wallet, some spare socks, pens, and so forth, as well as a few dividers to place different documents in.

There’s a plethora of easily accessible pockets, and the zippers seem pretty sturdy. It even comes with a pen leash! The major disadvantage is expandability; you won’t be able to stick several pairs of jeans and three or four shirts in this bag.

Back panel view of Tumi Alpha Bravo laptop packA Side snapshot of Tumi Alpha Bravo backpack

The pockets just don’t have much leeway for extra space, so it’s hard to use this bag as a duffel bag. Still, you could fit a few extra items.

My 2-Cents Worth

Generally speaking, Tumi Alpha Bravo Kingsville Deluxe Brief Pack is a great bag. It is definitely not the typical ‘boring’ laptop backpacks with the likes of Targus Drifter II or SwissGear ScanSmart.

There are a few caveats that make it a less impressive purchase for people looking for more space, but even then it makes a great supplement when used with rolling luggage.

If you’re interested in a nice bag that will hold up through years of punishment, this is just the ticket. The best laptop backpack I’ve ever owned, I’d recommend it for anyone looking for a quality backpack that is particularly stylish.

On Why a TSA-friendly Backpack is Essential

When considering a backpack, travelers have to take several things into consideration. One of the biggest concerns is safety. While the TSA garners a lot of controversy with their inspection practices, an often overlooked aspect of the process is the scanning machines.

These machines broadcast x-rays to see through the fabric and material of backpacks to check for contraband. However, these same rays can have harmful side effects on electronics, leading to hard drive issues and other operational problems.

As a result, several backpacks now come with a material that allows the rays to diffuse over a wider area, permitting the machines to see into the backpack while simultaneously protecting the contents within. The Timbuk2 Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly backpack is one example.

Design of Timbuk2 Uptown Backpack

Built for Comfort

Made of nylon, the Uptown provides superior comfort and durability, making it a great choice whether you are trekking across town or across the country.

With at least five color choices to pick from (gunmetal, black, carbon, Diablo, pacific), the Uptown can match any personality and style.

Top view of Timbuk2 Uptown TSA-Friendly Laptop BackpackTimbuk2 Uptown Laptop TSA-Friendly Backpack Review

As a bonus, the material is thin and light, making long distances a simple matter. Even though the nylon is thin, it is extremely durable, standing up to heavy loads and abuse while on the road.

TSA Checkpoint-friendly

An external laptop compartment diffuses the x-rays of TSA scanners over a wider area, preventing a high concentration of beams in one spot that can cause damage.

In addition, it aids in the security process, allowing your bag to be scanned quickly before boarding the plane. Because the compartment allows the x-rays to function, there is no need for the TSA to remove your laptop during the process.

The newest version of the Uptown has an added pocket for transporting iPads of all sizes and generations, and the laptop compartment can easily hold up to a 17” MacBook Pro.

Good Strap and Back Panel Design

Another great benefit of the Uptown are the ventilated back panels. Unlike many backpacks, the Uptown allows air to pass around and through your back, preventing heat buildup and sweat.

When carrying it over a long distance, particularly in the city, this can make travel a lot more comfortable – as well as protecting the water-sensitive components within.

The custom-fit strap design allows you to adjust the straps as necessary so that the Uptown fits just the way you want it to. A side pocket allows you to carry a water bottle and keep it within easy reach, and the unique Timbuk2 swing around technology means you can access the contents of the pack without ever taking it off.

Pocket and compartment design of TImbuk2 uptown backpackComfortable Strap of Timbuk2 uptown laptop pack

Plenty of Rooms

A massive amount of internal volume provides plenty of room for clothing and other gear. The main section of the pack is divided into sections, allowing you to carry the cables and other computer necessities in addition to your underwear and bathing materials.

The pack opens in such a way that it lays flat, preventing unnecessary pressure on any of the contents within.

Not a Backcountry Backpack Though

However, the backpack is designed mostly for easy use. It won’t hold up to the same type of abuse you would expect a backcountry pack to survive, so keep that in mind.

The pack is also not water resistant – if it begins to rain, find a way to cover the pack in order to protect whatever electronics may be inside.

There’s also no waist strap, so if the pack is overloaded and you carry it over larger hills can put some heavy strain on the back.

In the End

Overall, the Timbuk2 Uptown is more ideal as a backpack for college students, but not so much for backcountry trekkers.

It works great for carrying a laptop between classes or for strapping on your back for a quick cycle across town. It would even work well for short, intercity travel, but I would not recommend it for hardcore, extended camping trips.

Due to the lack of waterproofing, rain presents a major obstacle for the pack. Still, for travelers looking for the best checkpoint friendly backpacks, Timbuk2 Uptown is a major contender.

A world traveler has to keep track of countless details while on the move. Believe it or not, that’s just the international airport we’re talking about. In fact, a vacation of a lifetime can be far more trouble-free and fun than trying to navigate the challenges of international travel.

Like a superheros utility belt, we can mitigate many of these obstacles by purchasing a backpack designed for getting through checkpoints and all the infamous little niggles of airport security.

It’s a safety-conscious world we live in today, but the Everki Flight Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Backpack has the smarts to keep you moving through bustling airports thanks to features that follow rigorous TSA guidelines.

A Review on Everki Checkpoint-Friendly Laptop Backpack

It Makes Travel Experiences Less of a Hassle

A checkpoint friendly backpack review would barely be worth consideration if it didn’t start by underlining important features.

Ease of access is likely the top feature in considering any backpack designed for security checks, and this model from Everki doesn’t disappoint. The addition of the word friendly to the label of the backpack comes from its advantageous design, at least from the perspective of TSA officials, where the compartment holding the laptop can open to 180º for complete inspection.

Anyone who has been subjected to the checkpoint experience knows that a laptop is regularly removed from backpacks and carry-on luggage. Thanks to this fully unfolding design, the Everki bacpack, possibly a contender for best checkpoint friendly backpack out there, can fly through checks without the laptop being hauled out of the backpack.

It seems minor but something that turns into a sizable advantage when you are trying to juggle itineraries, tickets, and a passport.

It Keeps Your Laptop Well-Protected

I’d be remiss in this review if I didn’t mention the protective features Everki has integrated into the backpack. I realize laptops are an expensive investment, some of my less expensive models have been portable by definition, but they were never designed for the rigors of international travel.

Regardless, a laptop is a delicate piece of electronics, often expensive, and it needs protection. The Everki Flight Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Backpack meets this important requirement by including thick cushioning and padding, though the padding at the bottom of the backpack seemed a little thin.

If a backpack with the best laptop protection is what you are looking for, be sure to check our recommendation for the best laptop backpacks.

Everki Flight Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Backpack ReviewBack snapshot of Everki TSA Checkpoint Friendly Laptop pack EKP119

Accommodating laptops of around 16-inches and smaller, the fabrication of the backpack is solid in its construction, giving me the confidence to place sensitive electronics in one of the many available pockets. Incidentally, the bright orange interior may look a little gaudy, but it’s highly practical when fumbling for a small item, acting almost as an internal illumination. I feel pretty sure I’d find any tickets or items I was asked for by the charming TSA official who’d been on duty all day long and was looking at me with impatience.

The black design of the backpack has a stylish orange stripe to make it stand out, is equipped with a carrying handle and shoulder-straps.

It’s spacious, built to easily carry my laptop, a change of clothes, and all of my important documents as well as my new iPad, tightly stored away in a dedicated tablet pocket.

Rugged zippers open with ease, and, when finally clear of the checkpoint, I can shrug the backpack on and depend on the 5-point balance strap system and a series of straps to keep everything in place.

In many backpack reviews discussing this travel pack, most who have purchased and used this particular backpack have nothing but praises about its design. Little extras like a water bottle pocket and adjustable straps make me feel as if the design takes account of tired travelers.

Back to You

Now that you have seen the ins and outs of Everki flight checkpoint-friendly laptop backpack, it is your turn to make the call.

Compared to the likes of Samsonite Xenon X2, this travel pack might not boast the kind of brand power that puts any Samsonite product at an advantage to their competitors.

But if you are looking for the best backpack to ease the hassle at the TSA checkpoint and yet one that is stylishly designed, I think I’d rather put my bet on the Everki.

The Case Logic Security Friendly Laptop Backpack holds portable computers with a 16-inch screen or smaller. For best fit, we recommend using it with a device approximately 15.25 inches wide, 10.75 inches tall, and 1.75 inches deep.

In any case, many backpack reviews refer to it as one of the best checkpoint friendly backpack models available today. While it is definitely not a flawless product, it probably has everything done right for the price tag it fetches.

It is true that many people who have purchased this backpack end up being happy about their purchases. But if you’re looking for the best laptop backpack, is the the ideal fit for you? Scroll down and you’ll soon have a better idea.

A Backpack Designed for Travellers

The Case Logic Backpack allows you to bypass airport security much quicker. It meets TSA guidelines set by the government for use on a plane.

Furthermore, it offers a lightweight, compact storage solution for use on the go. It’s professional-looking enough for business travel, but it also works well for personal trips.

Where It has Drawn Praises

According to one customer checkpoint friendly backpack review, you can pass through security gates without having to unzip and re-zip it. Furthermore, this carry-on bag has a compartment especially for your device. You also benefit from extra sections designed for storing cameras, pens, folders, magazines paper, USB drives and more.

This item can help you make the most of your business trip while traveling from Point A to Point B. It also provides convenience for you because all your office supplies fit into it. As a result, you will not have trouble staying organized when you have tight transport deadlines.

In addition, this bag has an adjustable shoulder strap plus a hook for attaching to rolling luggage. You can also hide the excess strap to prevent tripping on it when racing to your plane.

Additionally, the nylon material is easy to clean when soiled. You can even wipe it with a wet towel. Moreover, this material resists water more than canvas or cotton, and this provides advanced protection against laptop damage. This item also has high-quality zippers.

Furthermore, this item has plenty of padding inside the place where you would store your portable PC. This not only keeps out moisture and insulates the device, but the interior cushions also prevent scratching and cracking.

Here’s an additional benefit: It stands upright when set on a chair or on the ground. This further protects it from the effect of mild impact if accidentally bumped.

Where It could Have Scored Better

Although it suits the needs of most business travelers, there may be occasions when U.S. transportation security officers require additional inspection. You can’t prevent that. Still, it does make it easier for you to pass through customs when you have only so much time to make your flight.

One other minor flaw noticed by a user: Even though the overall construction of the Case Logic Backpack is quite durable, it can unzip when too much weight is applied. Adding too many items to it can cause the bag to split into two loose-hanging sections.

Conclusion

One user checkpoint friendly backpack review indicates that you might have to travel light when using the Case Logic Backpack. Still, you can fit quite a bit of your business supplies into it. You even have a hook for your keys and smaller compartments for any grooming supplies, scissors or staplers you carry with you.

The Case Logic portable luggage is one of the best checkpoint friendly backpack designs available today. Even with its minor flaws, it’s still one of the most preferred on the market. It’s also one of the most popular.

Think about the pros and cons of this backpack. Ask yourself which issues matter the most to you and which shortcomings you can live by with.

Is this the best backpack? You are the best person to answer it!

Good Laptop Backpack Keeps Your Laptop Well-Protected

Good Laptop Backpack Keeps Your Laptop Well-Protected

You want a backpack to house your laptop. But the sheer number of options simply leaves you frustrated. Sounds familiar?

Fret not. You’re not alone.

There are a lot of factors that go into finding the best laptop backpack. Among the chief considerations are your laptop size and how well the backpack is designed to keep your laptop secure. That’s not all. Unless you’re fortunate enough to be carrying the ‘weightless’ Macbook Air, weight is a big issue.

A backpack well-designed for laptop users have to light, comfortable and yet does not compromise on things like laptop protection. With so many considerations and so many models to choose from, where do you start?

The Pelican U100 Black Elite storage backpack is widely regarded as among the best by the geeks. But what makes it good enough to be compared to the likes of Targus Drifter II and SwissGear Scan Smart? Read on and you’ll soon find out.

Where Pelican U100 Scores Well

If Your Notebook Can’t Fit In, No Other Bag Will

The Pelican U100 Black Elite Storage Backpack for a laptop fits notebooks that feature up to a 17-inch screen. Since most laptops have between 15 and 17 inches, there is a good chance that this one will accommodate your computer. The case is also watertight and crushproof, making it possible to take it out in the rain as well as in large crowds without having to worry about the integrity of the computer.

You can bring various things along with you besides the backpack. This includes a front compartment that will hold an iPad or tablet, which is impact protected. The bottom expands for sling storage and there is a concealed pocket designed to hold a water bottle.

Water bottle pocket of Pelican U100Top view of Pelican Elite Storage Backpack for Laptop

Good Weight Distribution & Comfortable

The size of the laptop is a primary consideration when choosing the best backpack. Various backpack reviews can be used to determine which one is going to fit your needs. You will want to read the various reviews to see what people have to say and what concerns are addressed within them. As they pertain to the Pelican U100, many people are happy with the backpack and how it distributes the weight.

The backpack provides comfort for a significant amount of time. If you plan on going hiking or taking a trip with the computer, you won¿t have to worry about trying to ditch the backpack. There is an S-curve that is ergonomically designed to provide comfort along the back. There are also load-compression straps to help ensure that the weight doesn¿t dig into your shoulders.

Whether a laptop is on your back or you are carrying it by hand, you need it to be comfortable. The Pelican U100 has a rubber over-molded handle to make it easy to carry ¿ and this is another feature that other backpacks simply don¿t offer.

TSA-friendly

If you are taking your laptop on a plane, there are some convenience features that you want to be aware of with the Pelican U100. The first is that there is a TSA top-loader access for the laptop. There is also an easy open latch that pushes open along with a pressure EQ valve, which prevents a pressure lock.

If you find yourself getting on the plane often, I know what a frustrating experience it is to go through the long lines just to get through the TSA checkpoints. It seems minor but when you already have to take off your shoes, belts and etc, taking out your laptop can really add to the frustration.

Full compartment view of Pelican U100 Black Laptop BackpackBack panel design of Pelican U100 Elite Storage Notebook backpack

If you think this is an important feature to have, you may want to consider Samsonite Xenon 2. The butterfly-style pocket is deemed by many to be the best answer to traveler’s TSA-checkpoint nightmare.

It is Water-Resistant!

Regardless of what you expose your laptop backpack to, it should be able to withstand the conditions. You never know what you¿re going to be up against and therefore you need to look at various features that offer protection.

The Pelican U100 backpack is IP67 tested for getting wet. It¿s a watertight case that can also withstand being under 3 feet of water for 30 minutes. If it were to drop into the ocean or pool, it likely wouldn¿t ruin your laptop ¿ and this is an important consideration when selecting a laptop bag because the whole reason for a bag is to offer protection.

If water-resistance is important to you, you may also want to consider 5.11 Covrt 18 tactical backpack.

Few Concerns to Think About

There are a few concerns addressed within the reviews. If you own the smaller 11-inch Macbook air, you’d have wished there is a smaller version option available. Smaller laptops will need to use foam inserts within the backpack to prevent it from rattling around.

This accessory is sold separately by Pelican and getting one should be easy. But still, there is the added expense that you have to consider as part of your investment. While not exactly on the same class, you may want to consider Case Logic DBLP backpack series if you have a small laptop.

The backpack itself is also close to 9 pounds, which can add significant weight on your back, especially when it has your laptop inside of it.

In Retrospect

You’ve now seen why Pelican U100 Elite has earned endorsements by many of the geeks. There are not many backpacks that will keep your laptop alive should you accidentally drop it into the pool. And this backpack is one of them.

Does it make the best laptop backpack? It certainly is but not everyone will find it perfect for their needs. Particularly true if you own a 11-inch Macbook Air. The base weight alone is multiple times heavier than your Macbook Air.

But for most people who needs the best protection for their laptop and doesn’t mind the weight, you know you have a winner in Pelican U100 Elite backpack.

Outlander packable lightweight travel backpack review

When I was looking for the best lightweight travel backpack, I found that many makers claimed their bags to be the best in the business.

When I tried them on, however, they were too bulky and heavy to be considered a real lightweight.

Let’s make this clear. I wasn’t looking to trek across the Himalayas. I simply wanted a compact backpack that I can carry with me when I’m visiting the streets of London and Paris.

Have you heard of packable travel backpack? I found that to be the exact answer to what I’m looking for. If you’re doing your research right, Outlander Packable Daypack will appear high on your radar. After referring to several backpack reviews, I thought I had to give this a try.

How did it fare? Let’s find out.

Packing instruction of Outlander Packable Lightweight Travel Daypack

Noteworthy Highlights of Outlander Packable Backpack

Waterproof is What You Need for Travelling

Because we were looking at some cloudy vacation days, I wasn’t sure if the Outlander pack would protect all of our electronics and wallets. However, I was pleased to see that the nylon fabric construction was water resistant. Drizzle actually sloughed off the material, allowing everything inside to remain dry.

I certainly wouldn’t drop the bag in a puddle because the zipper closures would allow water to penetrate to the inside. Water resistant isn’t waterproof.

Outlander Foldable Lightweight Travel BackpackImage of Outlander Packable Handy Lightweight Travel Backpack

Lightweight and Comfortable

Because I usually carry all the daily supplies with us as we visit local sights, I need a comfortable daypack. Luckily, it’s lightweight even with all our items tucked inside. I found the mesh shoulder straps to be wider than a typical backpack, but that can only mean good thing. It added to the breathable nature of their construction.

The strap adjusters were slightly frustrating to move, but once they were in place, I didn’t need to use them very often. They held the pack perfectly as we hiked our way around the cities.

Lock for Added Security

I was so happy to see that the two large pockets had dual zippers. Although Europe is a beautiful and friendly place to spend vacation, there are still some bad elements that pick through packs.

I was able to add small locks to each zipper pair for added protection. Although the zippers are not very heavy-duty, the locks will make thieves think twice about rifling through our items. If you plan to wander around the street of Paris, Barcelona and Madrid often, do beware of the pickpockets.

With the lock, the Outlander pack gives me an additional peace of mind.

Inner comparment view of Outlander Packable Travel daypackFront compartment view of Outlander Packable Travel Backpack

Pouch is Nice to Have

I found the best part of the Outlander pack was its included pouch. When I use the pack during the day, the pouch is empty. I use it for holding small trinkets we buy or even collecting business cards when my husband is networking.

At the end of the vacation, the daypack is not suddenly another bag to carry. The pack folds up neatly and fits perfectly in the empty pouch. I usually place it in my checked luggage because I don’t need it for carry-on purposes. When we get home, I can use the bag for other daily needs, from visiting soccer practice to a trip to the beach.

Where It Can Do Better

One of my largest concerns about the Outlander pack was the pocket quantity. There are two dual zipper pockets and one side pocket with one zipper.

Although this configuration may work for a couple on vacation, a large family will find this pack too small. The side pocket cannot be locked either, relegating it to holding just disposable items, such as napkins.

However, I was pleased to see two water bottle side mesh pockets. Traveling can be a hot job sometimes and having water nearby keeps us all hydrated.

My 2-Cents Worth

Now that you’ve seen my take on Outlander Packable backpack, I hope it leaves you with better idea on what to expect of this lightweight but highly rated travel backpack.

Does it make the best travel pack? It depends. It depends on the load you intend to stuff inside. It depends on what kind of stuffs you intend to carry with you.

This is obviously not meant to be a stand alone travel pack, but the ideal companion any backpacker will love instead. I don’t think you can carry with it even for a short weekend travel (unless you’re carrying nothing but 2 or 3 pieces of clothes). But you’ll love how it can easily fold and be placed inside your bigger pack.

The Osprey Daylite measures 18¿ x 9¿ x 8″ and offers up a surprising 793 cubic inches of space given its meager weight of just 16 ounces. While it’s specially tailored to the contours of the upper back, the pack includes an adjustable sternum strap and hip belt for achieving a firmer fit.

On the outside of the pack, there are two mesh side pockets for holding water bottles and a drawstring capable of securing any lightweight jacket or sleeping pad. There¿s also a thin front pocket with a mesh organizer and key clip for quick access to common necessities, but deep enough to fit some tablets.

Comfortable Straps

On the back of the pack, the tuck-away shoulder straps are lightly padded and covered with breathable spacer-mesh. The top of the straps have an integrated handle for easy carrying and the bottom of the pack has two hip belt pockets for hiding the lower strap when not in use.

The mesh-covered back panel features slotted foam padding to allow for good air circulation, and an external hydration sleeve has enough space for a three-liter water reservoir. The large panel-loading main compartment opens wide, making it easy to pack and unpack or locate specific gear.

If You Need Huge Space, It’s not for You

While its roughly 13-liter capacity is larger than many daypacks, the Osprey Daylite might not be the best backpack for those in need of large amounts of space. The main compartment is spacious enough to fit most normal sized laptops, but won¿t accommodate 17-inch devices.

There¿s also no padded laptop sleeve for users who primarily want a computer bag. Its panel-loading design also can¿t be crammed quite as full as a drawstring top-loading daypack, and the thin padding on the straps can be uncomfortable under consistently heavy loads.

Is it the the best notebook bag? Obviously not. There is no way Osprey Daylite can be compared to such elites as Targus Drifter II and Timbuk2 Wingman when the best backpack for laptop users is what we’re talking about.

Generous Pockets & Compartments

That being said, the Osprey Daylite has plenty of room for a wide range of activities. It can easily accommodate a jacket and a picnic lunch for an afternoon hike, camera equipment and a few sandwiches for a day of birding, or a change of clothes and a small laptop for daily bicycle commuting.

It¿s also perfect for young fathers who have to cart around extra water, snacks, and supplies. The subdued metro styling and comfortable fit of this backpack are far more appealing than the overly-styled, chunky nature of the average diaper bag.

It’ll be Long before You Need to Find another Backpack

The Osprey Daylite is also right-at-home in the great outdoors. Its durable ripstop nylon fabric prevents tears from spreading beyond their point of origin, ensuring this pack¿s longevity. The snug fit achieved from correctly adjusting the pack¿s multiple straps makes one almost forget they are even wearing it.

Both cozy and comfortable, this daypack allows for running and jumping without any discomfort or balance issues. Troop leaders and group leaders also have plenty of reason to offer a glowing backpack review.

The Osprey Daylite wide-open panel-loading design makes it easy to quickly find whatever you need, cutting down on stop times when hiking with a club or large party.

Is it a Worthy Investment? You Decide!

As its name implies, Osprey Daylite is a daypack. It’s not just another daypack, but a great one indeed.

I really love how this lightweight pack can easily be attached and detached to my larger Osprey Waypoint. I know that even when I only have 2 backpacks, it lets me choose between 3 capacity options. For weekend travel, I just grab my Waypoint. For light hiking, I just grab my Daylite. For longer travel, I simply grabbed both of them.

Love Photography? Only Lowepro are Good Enough. Probably.

Even semi-serious photographers know the importance of having a good camera backpack. After spending thousands of dollars for your Nikon or Canon DSLR, skimping on the backpack is the last thing you want to commit.

For decades, Lowepro backpacks have been the trusted choice among amateur and professional photographers. I talk to a number of friends who happened to be photography enthusiasts. Although there are not thousands of photography enthusiasts whom I could speak to, I can see what a popular choice Lowepro Flipside camera backpack is among the photography community.

What is it that makes the best camera backpack so different from the best laptop backpack? Where does Lowepro Flipside backpack excel when many others have fallen short? Let this backpack review shows you the ins and outs that make it such a hot favorite among photographers.

Winning Features of Lowepro Flipside

It has what every photographer needs

You need a good backpack for carrying lenses and camera bodies along with other gear that is convenient to use, easy to carry and provides adequate storage space and protection for the expensive equipment that gets carried so often.

The Flipside series of backpack camera cases by Lowepro is one of the very best camera backpack solutions available. It has two shoulder straps and a padded waist belt to keep the backpack secured and help to evenly distribute the weight and offers ample storage with several Flipside models available.

Multiple sizes to perfectly fit your camera size

The Flipside is available in four sizes and two standard varieties with the Flipside 200 being the smallest and the Flipside 500 the largest. In between are the Flipside 400 and 300, which formerly was the largest before the 400 and 500 were created.

All types are made of weather-resistant nylon, and one camera backpack review cited Lowepro as having a target market of photojournalists, outdoor photographers and urban photographers with the Flipside.

No matter the skill level, the Lowepro camera backpacks retail for relatively affordable rates ranging from well under $100 for smaller models and well under $200 for the largest.

What it can hold

Build quality is very good with sturdy materials, professional stitching and generally excellent construction. The backpacks have ample room for large lenses with the 200 capable of containing up to an 80mm to 200mm zoom lens along with camera, extra camera body, a smaller lens and flash equipment.

The Flipside 300 and 400 backpacks can hold up to 300 mm lenses while the Flipside 500 can contain up to a 500 mm lens. All types are about 18 inches tall and have a hidden tripod holder that allows for the secure carrying of a tripod or monopod on the outside of the backpack.

Side pocket view of Lowepro Flipside 300 camera backpackConvenient tripod fitting into Lowepro camera backpack

A skilled and experienced photographer can take virtually all the equipment he or she might need for several days or even weeks in the field with one of the larger Flipside camera bags and still have room for food, a first aid kit and other essentials.

Padding to protect your spine and also your expensive camera

Depending on the type chosen and internal configuration, the camera backpacks can hold up to between three and six extra lenses and up to three extra camera bodies that are secured with three straps across various points of the body and backside-only access, although some types also offer side access.

The protective padding is sufficient to provide all-day comfort when hiking or out shooting for long hours while also protecting the gear a good amount of shock absorption. There are external side pockets that are secured by zippers and a zippered internal compartment for personal storage or more camera equipment.

The Flipside offers many innovative features for serious and professional photographers in a lightweight, durable and rain-resistant backpack case. The Flipside can carry one or more cameras and camera bodies, several lenses, flashes, filters, cleaning supplies and other gear as well as a tripod.

One of the best aspects of the Flipside system by Lowepro is that it offers completely hands-free carrying while also distributing the weight of camera gear across most of the upper torso. That means photographers can focus on their photography with both hands on the camera ready to shoot in the shortest time possible while hiking and out in the field.

A feature unique to itself

The Flipside gets its name from its unique ability to allow access through the backside of the backpack by keeping the waist belt attached, removing the shoulder straps and sliding the backpack around to the front.

Flip it down and a padded back zipper panel allows the wearer to access the primary camera storage compartment while also staying in place when there are no hands used for support. That means a quick change of lens, filter, flash or other component could be done with the bag secured to the waist and both hands free to operate a full-sized camera.

The Final Score

I may not be the best photographer. I know my skill may not be a match to many of you. But as someone who carries his Canon 1Ds Mark III for most of his trip, I believe my Lowepro Flipside backpack has served me well so far.

I have no doubt that it makes one of the best camera backpacks. I can see how it earns those rave reviews. If you’ve spent thousands of dollars on your photography equipments (camera, lenses, tripod etc), getting a Lowepro Flipside series backpack may be the wisest thing to protect your investments.

Like Hiking? Be Sure to Get Yourself a Good Hiking Backpack

I can feel the excitement in you. The fact that you’re hunting for a great internal frame backpack tells me that your long deserved holiday is just around the corner.

To most people, High Sierra is best known for producing some of the top-selling student backpacks. While it is not a pure travel backpack specialist like Teton, I don’t think it is wise to rule them out before going through their backpack reviews.

Priced within similar range as Teton Scout 3400 is High Sierra Sentinel 65 internal frame backpack. What can be expected of it? Let’s zoom in and find out.

Zooming In on High Sierra Sentinel 65

Few Highlights to Start With

For those looking for a great backpack review, the High Sierra Sentinel 65 is a good choice. A durable, sturdy pack that allows the user to carry the necessary weight without adding more weight itself, the Sentinel 65 provides 65 liters of storage space at just 4.8 pounds on its own.

Another beneficial feature for serious backpackers is the rain cover ¿ water resistant (thought not waterproof), this rain cover helps to keep the pack and its contents high and dry in the event of a storm. For someone who hikes in rainy regions, like the famous Appalachian Trail, this is a major boon.

A hydration port on the side of the pack allows you to carry water in the backpack itself and drink directly from it, just as if it were one of the famed Camelpaks. This reduces the amount you have to carry with you, although if you’re in direct sunlight all day, the water will be warm. Still, the added benefits of having an extra water storage area cannot be understated.

Easy and Convenient Top-Loading

The Sentinel 65 loads from the top of the pack with a gusseted drawstring, with an added sleeping back compartment on the front. This makes accessing your sleeping bag when its time to make camp easy, without the need to withdraw every item you have stored before finding it.

However, because it loads from the top, it’s usually best to place the least-needed items on the bottom. Anything you need often, or potentially quickly, place in the top of the pack for easy access.

Mesh side pockets store two 1000 millimeter water bottles, allowing you to carry plenty of fluids if needed. A webbed daisy chain allows for added attachments to the pack, so you can customize it as the need arises.

Great Padding to Ensure High Level of Comfort

The Sentinel 65 offers plenty of support, reducing the strain placed on the backpacker. Two aluminum frame bars can be adjusted to fit comfortably on the back, reducing unwanted pressure. The shoulder harnesses are designed to fit snugly but not chafe, and their mesh design allows for plenty of airflow to keep sweating to a minimum.

The same applies to the molded foam panel that fits against the backpacker’s back; the patented Airflow channels allow for constant circulation of air to keep both the pack and the backpacker dry. A waist belt helps to secure the pack snugly against the body, and an adjustable sternum strap keeps it from placing any strain on the spine.

When backpacking with a fully-loaded pack, many people find themselves getting injured because of improperly adjusted straps or other reasons; the Sentinel 65 guards against this with all of the frame suspension built into it. So far as packs go, this is one of the best internal frame backpacks for safety.

Plenty of Capacity

At 32 inches tall, 14.25 across, and 8.75 inches deep, the pack is quite sizable, with a full capacity of 3970 cubic inches. It makes it a fantastic choice no matter what kind of journey you’re on, whether it’s a normal camping trip or a long-term hike through the wilderness. There is plenty of room to store cooking supplies, and with the external daisy chains, you can easily add more gear if you need to.

The High Sierra Sport Company has been producing quality backpacks for more than 25 years, aimed at people who make extreme look like playing in a sandbox. These packs are designed to deliver comfort while still holding up to the best nature can throw at them.

In fact, the High Sierra Sport Company supplies the US Ski and Snowboarding teams with their gear ¿ the Sentinel 65 can definitely stand up to any abnormal hiking conditions someone might encounter.

And because it molds so well to the shape of your back, the Sentinel 65 becomes ‘yours’ ¿ it bears your shape after using it for a while, making it fit you perfectly comfortable. A great way to mark it as your own, the backpack comes in a variety of different colors, with the blue and orange standing out as the most visible.

The durable material it is constructed from resists stains and tears, and can be sewn back together for quick repairs if necessary. For the average hiker or the extreme adventurer, this back is a good choice no matter what you do.

Is it Made for You?

I love travelling. That’s how I keep my brain healthy (according to studies). But even between myself and my best travel buddy, we don’t usually carry the same backpack when we set out travelling.

Why? Simple. I believe everyone of us is unique. Even things like personal grooming (shaving kit etc) can be so different. This is why even if I tell you High Sierra Sentinel 65 has been the best backpack I ever owned, you might not think likewise.

I can’t decide for you and it is never my intention to do so. But with all the pros and cons you’ve been exposed to, I believe you now have the necessary information to decide for yourself.

If you’re still unsure or simply would like to see more alternatives before deciding, be sure to check out our winners for the best travel backpacks. Find out which backpack models make it to our elite list.

What Makes a Great Backpack

If you are preparing to buy a new backpack, it’s important to find one with certain elements that will make all the difference in your daily experience of wearing the bag.

Backpacks with external framework are very sturdy, but are also heavier in weight. Backpacks with internal framework are designed to have a lighter weight, and be more comfortable for longer trips, providing more mobility. (Click to see internal vs external frame backpack comparisons) Wide padded straps also make for a more comfort, along with compression straps to hold your pack snugly in place.

A water resistant or waterproof material is also highly recommended if you intend to use the backpack in situations where you will be exposed to rainy weather, or if you may find yourself hiking through wet or snowy environments. Ventilation systems are advised to keep your back and body dry and cool.

The best internal frame backpack will provide all of these features, be lightweight, of sturdy construction, and comfortable.

Is High Sierra Cirque 30 a Great Investment?

Padding Designed for Maximum Comfort

The High Sierra Cirque 30 Pack backpack has received much praise for its sturdy construction and lightweight comfort. It has a thick and firm molded foam back panel lining that makes for great comfort.

This back panel also has Airflow channels that keep your back cool and dry. The Cirque 30 backpack has wide straps with thick padding and a removable media pocket for your phone or MP3 player.

The padded and adjustable sternum strap helps to stabilize the pack and keep it centered on your shoulders along with padded and adjustable side compression straps. There are also adjustable load-lifter straps that keep your backpack held snugly in place and allow you to adjust the size of the bag according to your needs.

Runners have commented that this pack is so snug and comfortable; they can wear it on the track and forget that they even have it on.

Detailed Compartment Design

The High Sierra Cirque 30 Internal Frame Pack is equipped with an internal hydration reservoir sleeve and an exit port for a tube; dual mesh side pockets for water bottles, gym shoes, or sweaty work-out clothes; soft lashing hardware that holds hiking poles, tripod, an ice axe, and other equipment; and webbing daisy chain to attach extra gear.

This cleverly designed 30 liter backpack is constructed of 1680-D Ballistic durable nylon material that meets military use specifications. It is double-stitched and has weather protective storm-flaps over the zippers.

It has a large zippered front pocket with an inner mesh divider, and a second spacious compartment. It measures 21.5″ x 12.75″ x 9.0″ and weighs 2.4 pounds. It is available in Amazon Pine Leaf Green, Pacific Nebula Blue, Redrock Auburn, and black.

Hikers have commented that they are able to carry their sleeping bag; tent; collapsible tripods, fishing gear; clothes; food, and two one-liter bottles with this nifty little bag. They also appreciate the durability and sturdy construction; the comfortable fit with the padded adjustable straps; and the sternum strap with elastic bands that allow easy breathing during long treks.

While larger backpacks with exterior framework are required for some purposes, this sturdy and versatile bag can be the perfect backpack for many of your multi-purpose and everyday needs. It is the perfect size for students who need a mid-sized bag to haul books, and gym clothes; and can easily be used as a carry-on bag and day bag when traveling.

Fitness enthusiasts, dancers, and athletes appreciate the size of this 30 liter bag, which fits neatly into their gym lockers.

Your Turn

Personally, I feel High Sierra Cirque 30 is rugged enough to be the perfect companion for adventure seekers. But since it’s not designed to be a laptop backpack, you may want to take note of its lack of laptop padded compartment. This means that if you usually carry a laptop or iPad with you, you may need to get a separate laptop pouch or consider other alternatives such as Samsonite Xenon 2.

So what do you think High Sierra Cirque 30 backpack? Do you think it has what you’re looking for in a tough backpack that is still suitable for your every day needs?
